CECS Interdisciplinary Programs

Hydrologic Science and Engineering

The Hydrologic Science and Engineering (HSE) Program at the Colorado School of Mines is an interdisciplinary graduate program that brings together experts from the Civil and Environmental Engineering department, Chemistry and Geochemistry,  Geology and Geological Engineering, Geophysics, and Mechanical Engineering. We offer programs of study in fundamental hydrologic science and applied hydrology with engineering applications, designed to provide students with a solid background in quantitative hydrology and allow them to explore specialties within related fields.

Nuclear Science and Engineering

Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) is an interdisciplinary program that draws on contributions from the Departments of Applied Math and Statistics, Chemistry and Geochemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Liberal Arts and International Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Physics. Mines faculty participating in the program have the breadth of expertise to address all aspects of the nuclear fuel life cycle; from fuel exploration and processing, through nuclear power systems production, design and operation, to fuel recycling, storage and waste remediation and radiation damage and the policy issues surrounding each of these activities.

Underground Construction and Tunneling

Underground Construction and Tunneling (UC&T) program at Mines is the most comprehensive collection of courses in UC&T anywhere in the United States. We are a collaborative, interdisciplinary group of faculty and students from the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geology and Geological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mining Engineering, as well as Geophysical and Computer Science, all with a collective interest in education and research in underground engineering. We pursue industry-driven research that advances practices, reduces risk and grows the underground construction and tunneling market through innovation.
